Arizona hunting and fishing licenses are available online again

PHOENIX – They’re back: Arizona hunting and fishing licenses are available online once again.

It’s simple and easy: just visit the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Web site at www.azgfd.gov to decide what license or license package suits you or your family best, and make the online purchase using your Visa or MasterCard from the convenience of your own home or office.

“It’s been a long time coming. But the timing is superb for hunting and fishing conditions,” said Game and Fish Deputy Director Bob Broscheid. “Our interior lakes are filling and spilling. There’s a lush green-up in the desert low lands. Plus we have a tremendous snow pack in the high country.”

There is a $1.50 Internet fee for buying your license online – the fee actually pays for the service. Be sure to have a printer handy; you must physically print out the license you purchase online (color or black and white will work).

If you need a little help while purchasing the license online, there is telephone assistance available during normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours Monday through Friday by calling (602) 942-3000.

There are lots of hunting and fishing license options available, including some exceptional deals on Family Licenses, so be sure to shop online at Buy a License for the license package that works best for you.

You will also find lots of online help deciding where to go on your hunting or fishing adventures.

The Game and Fish Department’s Web site is full of where-to and how-to fishing and hunting information. In fact, you can even subscribe to the weekly fishing report or the Hunter Highlights e-news products and have them delivered directly to your computer.

Agency officials pointed out that the online license sales and other online services were suspended almost three years ago due to workload difficulties the former vendor experienced during the online big game draw process. There is no projected date for when the online hunt draw process will be available online once again, although agency officials are actively working on the issue.

The Game and Fish Department operates on revenue-driven “user pay, user benefit” business model and relies on non-tax dollars – it receives no tax money from the state’s general fund.

Elk Calling
Elk Calling

Elk hunting has gained it?s popularity over the past years as a good sport that offers a satisfying result to beginners. Hunting for elks are legal in most countries provided you have the approved documents that were assigned from your local government agencies. The growing numbers of elks in some region threatens some local ecosystem such as elks competing for food among other herbivores. Hunters are allowed to kill a certain numbers of elks each year, commonly with the limits of a license system that identifies them as an approved elk hunter.

To hunt an elk, one must have their equipment ready beforehand. Rifles or bow and arrows are the main weapon of choice for most hunters. Getting them correctly set up before leaving for a game is very important. Now, having every piece of equipment ready, a good location is chosen, and you have bought your license, it is then all up to how you attract the elks to you.

When you are out in the wild, you are basically stepping into a world where only the elks know where it is, but not you. To say it in a simpler manner, you are simply out hunting in a new environment because the elks know the landscapes more than you do. You are disoriented out there and unless you have a guide that understands the ground more than you do, you are pretty much going to be left with an empty game bag just like any other beginners. And this is when the elk calling technique steps into the picture.

Elk calling is a simple way of attracting elks towards you for you to kill them easily. To find an elk is not easy, calling them over proves to be easier than nothing done. Hunters mimic the sound of barking and bugle of the cows and bulls. This is still not enough to attract them; they include squeals and grunts too as most of the hunters often missed out.

Hunters practice bugling and calling at home based on audio tapes and so to get the ultimate sound that any bull, cow or calves will pay attention to it. It is a technique to put into the overall hunting experience too and to know how good your hunting skills are, your elk calling skills are taken into consideration in judging how good you are. Getting to shoot the elk down is a matter of technique, where calling the elk towards you is also a technique to be paid attention to.

Elk rutting season is one of the most active season for elk hunting. This is when bulls are actively searching for cows to copulate. In this scenario, if a hunter is to hunt a prized bull, he will succeed by mastering the cow talk technique. Rut crazy bull is known to be very sensitive to cow?s call. Often being missed by hunters to learn how a cow squeals, those who have tried will definitely know the effect of cow talking.

With technologies advancing fast, there are so many elk hunting aids available. Apart from being able to record the way elks communicate with each other, then selling them in the form of tapes or media to hunters to learn them, there are also equipments made to mimic the elks vocal properties. Elk whistles are made specifically to give out the correct pitch and sound waves other elks are giving out. Elk whistles are just an example, not missing elk whistles, and also sound producers as simple as pressing a button or two to emit the calling sound you wanted.

No matter what ways you use to hunt an elk, calling them to you is an art, while mastering them will bring you good results in your hunting experience.

Elk Hunting ? The Ethics Issues
Elk Hunting ? The Ethics Issues

As with any modern-day hunting activity, there will always be ethical issues attached to it. Elk hunting is not spared. The debate on this has spawned as long as some form of legislative body has been in place and will definitely go on as long as there are differing opinions on game hunting.

One key issue is the hunting season itself. Avid elk hunters are aware that seasonal hunting gives the best opportunity for a good hunt, whether for meat or for trophy. However, in recent developments, all-season hunting has been made available, meaning hunters are able to choose the time that suits them the most and go hunting at any time of the year. This is the result of game farms, where farmers allocate hectares of land to breed and raise elk and other game animals, for the sole purpose of allowing hunters to pay and hunt within these encroachments.

Activists believe this has made elk hunting too much of a sport without taking into consideration the biological needs of the elk population. This includes interfering with and manipulating of the natural breeding and birthing cycle and process. This in turn will result in less superior elks, more prone to cross-animal diseases and other genetic implications.

The other pertinent issue would be the purpose of hunting them. Different hunters are into this activity for different reasons. Apart from the lean meat that wild elks provide, there are hunters who are in it for the endurance-like challenge, with end-result of either taking away with them the meat or just the trophy, which ultimately are the head and antlers. In some cases, such as in ?research captures?, the elks are tranquilized and only the antlers removed.

The age of the elks hunted also varies. This aspect may be an issue among some. The meat-hunters will go for elks that have just matured into young bulls or cows and occasionally yearlings or calves are hunted as well. For trophy hunters, the more matured bulls provide the best yield. Occasionally, hunting for cows means that the yearlings? dependent upon them will lose their provider, for nursing and protection. Weakened calves or death among the still-nursing, abandoned calves will be almost eminent.

Another issue raised by many is the method of hunting or killing of the elks. While it is well known that primitive weaponry is no longer used, it is often debated whether modern-day weaponry such as rifles and tranquilizer guns are more humane. Reality is, a hunt means stalking and immobilizing it, or ideally, killing the elk the fastest possible way. However, in many cases, injury not resulting in instantaneous death of the hunted elk does occur. In many cases, the use of high-powered rifles results in a direct hit of vital organs. However, the elk is either still able to move about, resulting in the hunter having to hunt for a wounded, suffering elk. In some instances, where terrain and weather may hamper the hunter, it may take hours or worse, days before a wounded elk is found. By then it would probably have died a fairly agonizing death.

Other concerns raised by certain parties are the ecological impact of such activity. This includes the trail of human litter, where irresponsible hunters may leave behind gear or rubbish brought along into the wilderness while hunting.

History of Elk Hunting
History of Elk Hunting

For as long as man has co-existed with animals on this earth, hunting has always been part of human nature. It started as a biological need to survive; for food and skin to satisfy hunger and give shelter. In the years that the world has changed, so has the nature of hunters and the hunted. Man no longer hunt for basic needs; hunting has become a need for adrenaline rush, for alternative sporting activity and for trophy hunting. Hunting for meat is no longer the strongest reason for elk hunting.

Elk hunting dates back to the times of the natives of North America. Amongst the native North Americans, wapiti or the American elk, was a good source of lean meat and was almost always in abundance. Hunting in the traditional way meant brandishing weapons such as the long spear, bow and arrows. Apart from that, short hunting knives were used in the actual killing and meat-skinning process.

The Native Americans, and also the Alaskans, used to hunt in a small group and would pick-up the trail of a herd, stalk the potential elk and eventually find the best opportunity to kill it, without disturbing much of the herd?s activity. As silent as the elks could be, the hunters would be more stealth-like. The success rate of their hunts were monumental, yet their kill was very well-targeted, accurate and almost always for the sole purpose of feeding the tribe or getting specific parts. The Native Americans were not known to indulge in hunting for pleasure.

Hunting elk had been a large part of the Native American communities? culture. In a lot of ways hunters were regarded very highly as they fulfilled the needs of their tribe through hunting activities. The meat from hunts would be distributed amongst the tribal members, leftovers dried and preserved to tide them through the harsh winters.

The skills and culture of hunters of the olden days were recorded and it is noted that hunting took place on a very regular basis. However, it has been duly noted that none of the hunting activities the traditional way actually created any imbalances in terms of herd population in any particular area. With the introduction of new and more lethal weaponry over the past century, there has been an increase in sport-hunting of elks in all areas of elk population.

Weapons such as rifles and shot guns, on top of the bows and arrows created a new breed of hunters. They were now better equipped not only with weapons, but navigational tools. Not only did it mean there were more hunters, it also meant that there were more attempts at hunting elks, some successful and others not. This meant a higher number of weapon-related injuries to the elk population and a slight increase in displacement of elk population in the wilderness.

Nowadays, with the advent of better weapon and navigational technology as well as camping and survival gear, elk hunting has evolved far beyond a mere hunting activity. Demands for lean elk meat remain constant throughout the year. Trophy hunters seek out the best opportunities and best bull elks to fulfill their passion. With legalized and licensed hunting legislated in U.S. states with elk population, elk hunting is business.

It is now common for game farmers to breed and raise elks in enclosures for the sole purpose of allowing hunting within them. Although elk hunting has existed historically for centuries, it has taken on new meaning in the last few decades.

Where to Hunt Elk
Where to Hunt Elk?

Similar to other game animals, elks have specific habitats and areas where the herds are larger. One of the toughest things about elk hunting is the ability to find them. There are two types of hunts that usually take place, either a self-guided hunt or a guided hunt. Both types of hunt may be done well within a specific compound where farmers raise game animals within acres of enclosure; or out in the wilderness. Guided hunts means the hunter is with another more skilled and knowledgeable person who is hired to assist in finding the area, stalk the elk and eventually assist in the kill and even the ?packaging? of the catch. On the other hand, a self-guided hunt usually means going at it yourself.

One of the basic things is to know where to go to find suitable game. A hunter needs to pick a state that he wants to hunt in and research the area he wants to hunt. This encompasses the use of topographical maps or aerial photographs of the area to hunt in. With maps and photos to assist, the hunter can zoom-in on areas off the beaten path that may be elks? refuge.

Among the signature things to look for include creeks, flattop ridges near secluded meadows and even watering holes. After having researched two or three possible hunting areas, hunters could either call local game authorities or wildlife biologists in those areas to find out where among those areas would hold the largest number of elks or the biggest bulls. Basing the hunt area on this advice would be a strategically sound starting point.

The next most important thing to consider is the planning the duration of such a hunt. If hunting in an area they have never hunted in before, they should plan a hunt at least 10 to 12 days long. Many hunters fail to capitalize on this aspect of planning and sell themselves short with a hunt that is only a week long. It usually takes days to locate elk in a new area and to figure out the herd?s patterns. With only days to spare in a week-long hunt, hunters usually find themselves not having ample time to actually complete a hunt before supplies and ammo run out.

A hunt that is 10 days to two weeks long is ideal, as it gives the hunter time to locate and understand the pattern of the elk population there, then plan for the actual hunt. Bad weather may also affect the time a hunter has to execute his plans. Therefore, prepare for all possibilities by planning for a longer hunt.

Hunters may consider setting-up of a base-camp. It may be more prudent to set-up a base camp several miles off the road system. This allows a hunter to hike into the mountains each morning and return to base camp at the end of each day. This will mean having top-notch camping gear to withstand all kinds of weather and tougher terrain.

The other way is to stay at a motel near enough to the mountain trails and hike-up into the mountains at the beginning of each day. Of course it is still very possible to hunt and kill elks this way, but more time may be wasted traveling than actually locating and stalking the elks in the mountains. Diehard elk hunters would definitely not opt for this.

The most important thing about any elk hunt is; knowing where to go, learning as much about the area and the elk population there and of course planning and gearing-up. It is not unusual for hunters to come back empty-handed, but given the right sort of build-up towards a hunt, either self-guided or otherwise, a hunter will most certainly get some satisfaction.
